Friday, 5/8/2020 - SAU29 COVID-19 Update

Good Afternoon,

Happy Friday everyone!  I’m not sure if anyone else is feeling this way, but it sure seemed to be a little busier this week, so I am grateful that it is Friday and hope that everyone is able to enjoy a little down time this weekend to recharge the engines.

I am pleased to announce that after a unanimous recommendation from the Search Committee and an overwhelmingly supportive response from the feedback submitted by those who weighed in, that Dr. Cindy Gallagher was offered and has accepted the Principal of Keene High School position. Please join me in welcoming Dr. G to our wonderful community as she will have the difficult task of taking the wheel from Mr. Logan at the end of this school year.

The Class of 2020 survey was opened to all graduating seniors this morning. Notices were sent out this morning and this is the opportunity for our soon-to-be graduates to help determine what their moment in the spotlight will look like.  If you have a graduating senior, please remind them to log into their school email account in order to access the survey. The intent is to make determinations on certain activities by May 22nd.

I have heard some recent concerns about shutting down activities at the high school that occurred this past week. To be clear, those activities were never approved to open in the first place. It has been included in every daily update that the school buildings would be closed to everyone except for staff beginning on March 23rd. That has not changed to this point in time.  When the time does come to change that guidance, you will definitely find it in the daily update.

Although it has been a massive undertaking putting together the song list from last week’s challenge, we are ready to release some of what was shared.  With the more than 350 students submitting their top three (3) songs, I am sharing the SAU 29 Top Ten Most Submitted Songs by our students (and some staff as well) at the end of this update. Feel free to create a playlist with those songs using your favorite music platform.

On Monday, we will launch the first of the three (3) videos we are sharing during Mental Health Awareness Month. The details on accessing the film “Like” can be found below in the update.  For a personal message from our SAU 29 Board Chair regarding the importance and value of all three videos, please use the embedded link above.

I believe we have finally solved the issue for the broader public to be able to view school board meetings in real time!  We will be testing this out over the coming days with the intent of having that available next week. Please be on the lookout on future Board Agendas for guidance on how to view the meetings as they are taking place.

As it is Friday and we are heading into the weekend, some friendly reminders to keep in mind:

  • Continue to reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher(s), counselor and principal with any concerns you may have regarding remote learning.  They, like you and I, only want the best for all of our students.
  • Remember your check-ins to make sure that you and those you hold dear are still doing well.  It’s probably been the longest roller coaster ride that anyone has been on and we still don’t know when it’ll stop.
  • Try to schedule some time to celebrate you for all that you have done!

I’ll finish up by leaving you with this four (4) minute embedded video link on The World's Toughest Job Interviews for you to enjoy and wish all of the moms out there a Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Friday and Please Be Well,

Remote Learning: If you are experiencing any difficulties or concerns with your child’s remote learning or have questions regarding what is expected, please start by asking your child’s teacher. Our teachers are doing a GREAT job of continuing the teaching and learning process through these adverse circumstances and can provide immediate answers or direct your questions accordingly.

Mental Health and Mental Health Awareness MonthWe received the dashboard for our first film today, but we won’t be able to share that until Monday as we are scheduled to begin viewings at that time.  We have included, as an attachment to the update, a social media tip sheet from Indieflix that offers some recommendations on how best to manage the influences of social media for your consideration.

Our schedule for the films will be as follows:

May 11-15:  Like a film about the impacts of social media.

May 18-22:  Angst a film about anxiety in our youth.

May 25-29:  The Upstanders a film about Cyber-bullying.

A friendly reminder that we have limited viewings for each film, so it is really important that households only access one of the viewings.  This will allow more of our families and our staff to be able to watch the films as well.

As always, please reach out to your child’s team of school counselors or school nurses if you need support or assistance during this challenging time. If you are not sure who to contact, please call or email your child's building principal.  If you are unable to reach someone, please contact the Student Services Offices at 357-9001 extension 230 or email [email protected].
